The Civilization series is the granddaddy of Turn Based Strategy games. Although it can be argued that some may be better for one reasons or another, but when it comes to the best, Sid Meiers epics are always of the first to be mentioned. It was a hard decision whether to include this or Civilization 3. However, Civ IV simply seemed to eclipse III on most, if not all, levels. While its understandable picking a favourite from any of the series, when it comes down to these two, Civilization 4 has to win. Everyone has a different story to tell when it comes to Civilization. Whether its overcoming the odds or a war that lasts ten years of real time Civ is almost the definition of a watercooler game. A game that people can sit and share their experiences together. The multiplayer makes this even better, as well as being one of the easiest ways to run a friendship. If you have £10 and a few thousand hours spare, pick it up.
