15 Horrifying Video Game Easter Eggs You Totally Missed

13. Animal Crossing And Harvest Moon Think You Shouldn't Watch Late Night TV

There aren€™t many more inoffensive games than Animal Crossing: New Leaf, a classic Nintendo title about running your own town, doing odd jobs for people and getting your kneecaps broken by a tanuki loan shark. There€™s nothing remotely scary in this game €“ maybe apart from the mole that shouts at you every time you forget to save €“ unless you happen to be watching TV at a very specific time in the dead of night. Yep, every night at 3:33 am (and remember, it runs off your DS clock), if you switch on the TV, it€™ll stare right back at you with unblinking red eyes. This happens every single night at the same exact time, without fail €“ then suddenly stops. Whatever alien being is trying to communicate, it obviously thinks humans are nocturnal. A similar thing happens in the Japanese version of another slice-of-life sim, Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town €“ this time at 4:44 am. Switch on the TV at the appropriate time, and you€™ll see a steam of 4s interspersed with Japanese kanji. That might seem like nonsense to us, but in Japan, the word €œshi€ doubles as both the number 4 and the word for €œdeath€. Imagine if the English word €œthirteen€ also meant €œmurder€, and a message like that suddenly popped up on screen €“ you€™d be more than a little freaked out. This egg was removed in western versions of the game, because without the cultural context it doesn€™t really work as it€™s supposed to. Probably for the best.
