15 Horrifying Video Game Easter Eggs You Totally Missed

11. Super Mario Galaxy 2 €“ The Watchers

Mario games are generally not particularly creepy or horrifying €“ maybe apart from Boo and his ilk who popped up every so often with their creepy laughs. Usually, Mario is more about jumping on plants and avoiding bob-ombs than about weird supernatural creatures. Which is why their presence in Super Mario Galaxy 2 is all the more unsettling. The Shiverburn Galaxy is already a tough level, requiring near-perfect timing to avoid the lava pits and electric fields covering the entire surface. However, if you do get the chance to stop and rest, then switch to first person view and have a look around. You€™ll be able to see these shadowy figures at the edge of the galaxy, watching you. Always watching. Anywhere you go on this level, there they are €“ like a stalker. They never come closer, and you can€™t go near them, and nothing in the game talks about them €“ so why are they watching us? As happens with these sort of things, somebody got a hold of the game€™s source files to find out the truth €“ except things only got creepier. The skyline pattern for that level is called €œBeyondHellValley€ €“ but Hell Valley isn€™t the name of any level in Mario Galaxy 2. The shapes themselves are called €œHellValleySkyTree€ €“ but if those are what trees look like, then I am never going outside again.
