15 'Horror' Video Games That Totally Failed To Scare Anyone

15. The Evil Within

A horror game by legendary video game developer Shinji Mikami, The Evil Within had a lot of people very excited, and for good reason. Early teasers for the game made it look like a genuine attempt to recapture the essence of classic survival horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. What we got was a fairly average third person shooter, a decent action adventure game with substandard fighting mechanics and a convoluted, nonsensical plot. With that said, the biggest problem wasn't the gameplay but the story itself, which revolves around an antagonist with the power to manipulate the world around the player, constantly altering the landscape of the game. What this means is that one minute you€™ll be fending off zombies in a swamp, and the next minute you€™ll be battling crazies in a dungeon somewhere else; there€™s absolutely no sense of cohesion, which is why it€™s really hard to find yourself genuinely invested in the story, and if you're not invested in what's happening then you can really be scared. Some of the greatest survival horror games of all time have built themselves around a very particular environment, and cultivated an unsettling atmosphere around that said environment. In The Evil Within, things change so often that you barely have time to register your surroundings, let alone come to fear them. Just as you€™re starting to find yourself immersed, you€™re transported somewhere else entirely, so you might as well just settle in for the ride. Play Instead: Resident Evil (Gamecube)
