Not a single moment in the franchise, however, has been quite as insane as Black Ops 3's full-on dive into supernatural territory with the introduction of the Frozen Forest, a neurological landscape created by the villainous AI Corvus in order to generate the illusion of life after death.

After Corvus is about to take over the nameless player character in the game's final mission, the player commits suicide and ends up in the Black Forest, where they're terrorised by a shadowy, somewhat human-esque personification of Corvus, who unleashes illusory enemies in an attempt to keep you there.

It all pans out in the end, anyway, with the player purging their direct neural interface, killing Corvus and kinda-maybe living on inside Taylor's head...or something?

Even fans of the campaign will probably agree it's at once ridiculously ambitious and almost totally nonsensical, and best of all, completely unforgettable in its loony glory.
