8. Lara Croft's Iconic Assets Were An Accident

Speaking of things that are supremely awkward, did you know Lara Croft's biggest defining features across the 90s and 2000s actually came from an accident?

Due to the nature of designing the human form when the industry made the jump to 3D, character models were comprised of large blocks and shapes meshed together (look at Final Fantasy VII for proof). Thus, in Tomb Raider's case this meant designer Toby Gard was tinkering with a 'chest slider' when it came to enlarging or reducing the literal triangles that made up Lara's original bosom.

Apparently, one day Gard was hard at work and accidentally input 150% into the requisite field instead of 15%, only to see Ms. Croft's chest explode to an abnormal size. He promptly tried to figure out a way to reduce this, but his fellow team members convinced him to leave it, as the marketing potential was on the wall.

Gard would later speak on this to The Guardian in 2006, just in case you were thinking it was intentional all along:

“What I objected to was the marketing, which represented Lara in a way that was nothing like the character. At the time I didn’t like that and it prompted me to want to retain control of characters I created in the future, so that’s why I left.”
