15 Insanely Underrated PS4 & Xbox One Games You Must Play
14. Firewatch
One of the most divisive releases to come out in 2016, Firewatch is best described as your typical walking simulator - boasting all the good and all the bad that often comes out of that much-maligned genre - and yet it's also so much more.
While these types of games are often made or broken on the strength of their story, it's the characters and the world that actually shine the brightest in developer Campo Santo's latest release. Set in a seemingly deserted national park over a melancholy summer, there's only a handful of personalities that populate the woods of Firewatch, and even less that you actually get to interact with during the game's run-time.
Yet, while the bulk of the title is made up of radio chatter between park rangers Henry and Delilah, after a few hours you really feel like you've gotten to know both of them thanks to some crafty tricks from the writers.
It's this central dynamic that ultimately makes the game work, despite its admittedly underwhelming ending. But even then, having a bummer of an ending is kind of the point - Firewatch isn't a game about jaw-dropping twists and left-field plot developments, and it proves the genre doesn't have to rely on these same old tried and tested tactics to be successful.
