1. Sonic & Dr. Robotnik Both Have Superhero-Style Origin Stories
In 1991, a tie-in comic actually portrayed Sonic as coloured brown, showing him accidentally burrowing into the lab of one Ovi Kintobor, a scientist working on a machine called the Retro Orbital Chaos Compressor; one that held all the evil in the world inside seven Chaos Emeralds.
The two become friends, Kintobor putting Sonic to good use on a treadmill, only for his natural speed to overload the equipment - resulting in Sonic turning blue and for Kinto to give him the trademark red and white sneakers to get better results.
Following that, Kintobor has an accident, spilling soda into his machine and unleashing "10,000 volts of pure evil energy" onto himself. It merges his human form with an egg he was eating (yes, really) and morphs him into - as Sonic describes - an "evil, hardboiled, robotic nutcase". Brilliant.
