3. The Monkey Island Series
Choice Quote: Pirate: "Guybrush Threepwood? That's the most ridiculous name Ive ever heard!" Guybrush: "Well, what's your name?" Pirate: "*Promptly* My name is Mancomb Seepgood." The last of Tim Schafer's games on the list and the ones that simultaneously made him a huge name in the industry, as well as endearing him to the hearts of thousands of future adventure game fans. The original Secret of Monkey Island from 1990 received a remaster in 2009 that updated everything from character graphics to locations, as well as adding in voice acting. In a brilliant touch - and something that we'd also see in the Halo: Anniversary Edition - you needed only click a button to flick between the newer graphics and the pixellated originals. Chances are you've missed the original in favour of the fourth game's port to PS2, however even the recent episodically-released Tales of Monkey Island that was handled by Telltale Games still received very positive reviews, despite Schafer not being involved. We've already mentioned in the introduction the now-infamous collection of barbs that make up how sword fights are handled in the game, but it's the constant lampooning of the pirate genre in everything from dialogue to animation that brings the Monkey Island series to life.
