4. You're The Killer - Silent Hill 2

Man, I miss Silent Hill. I especially miss what P.T./the rebooted Silent Hills was going to turn out like (if it's possible to miss something in the future). That first release in 1999 brought a much-needed eastern horror philosophy to gaming that could contend perfectly with the increasingly gun-happy Resident Evil games. Instead of huge eyeball-popping monsters and firearms, Silent Hill had a killer concept of essentially warping into a parallel dimension of your own worst fears, and how every morally grey or bankrupt act you'd performed in the real world would - and could - manifest in Silent Hill. For this second instalment, it opened with one James Sutherland trying to solve the mystery of a letter arriving from his deceased wife; a point that takes him to the titular town. However, across a pretty hefty runtime and one of the most downright disturbing atmospheres there's ever been in any game, you slowly unravel the story that you killed her in the first place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6-pwYeTOOU Brilliantly, there's a few variations on the ending, all of which the creators have said can be considered canon, but in all of them the biggest twist of the lot is that Sutherland and all the machinations of Silent Hill (such as the freakish Pyramid Head) are brought about by repressions of his darkest desires and actions.
