15. Your Final Mission... Is To Kill Your Partner - Splinter Cell: Conviction

You never, ever hear about a developer putting something narratively worthwhile in a multiplayer component of their respective game, but that's what makes SC: Conviction's last-minute switcheroo such a humdinger. Coming right at the close of a string of co-operative missions, you've built up a rapport with someone either in-person or online. You've learnt how to mark and execute targets together, leapt up buildings and dispatched all manner of guards and security cameras, watching each others' backs as you went. That's why - when the anonymous order comes through from top brass to kill your former partner - it has a chilling and sad sense of "...but I really don't want to!" You realise, and it's something no other game has ever pulled off, that you actively care on a human level about the person you're being asked to take out, but then the realisation of whether or not your partner is being as considerate propels you to take action. Neither of you will know what the other is thinking, and that's the most devastating and memorable part of the whole thing, especially if you're playing with a best friend. It's total genius, and hopefully a tact another developer (or Ubisoft again) will implement somewhere down the line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2h335LmPsQ0
