15 Most Mind-Blowing Video Game Plot Twists Of The 2000s

14. "Who Is Desmond?!" - Assassin's Creed II

Hot off the heels of a first game that garnered just as much praise as it did criticism for being too repetitive, Ubisoft knew exactly what they had to do with AC II. From upping the mission variety to quadrupling your assassin's moveset, introducing a huge amount of gadgets and all-round ensuring the world itself was more inviting and fun to traverse, the main element that got people talking as the credits rolled was the modern day timeline receiving one hell of an adrenaline injection. Back in 2009 we were still firmly on board with the whole "Where's this futuristic plot going to go"-type stuff, and as such, following the tracking down of the evil impostor-Pope in Renaissance Italy, you had a run-in with a celestial entity claiming to be some otherwordly force, proclaiming the end of the world was nigh. It comes almost out of nowhere, as at this point the narrative had discussed mankind's existence being cyclical, that ancient man was once highly civilised and technologically advanced, yet were undone by power they couldn't comprehend. Ubisoft thusly framed the entire story as having the alien 'First Civilisation' talk 'through' Ezio in the 15th Century to both Desmond in the future, and you as the player. https://youtu.be/FRzrP9dOC6M?t=1138 Understandably, Ezio questions everything in front of him, as the game cuts to black and both we and Desmond both said in unison, "...What the f**k?!"
