10. Shin Megami Tensei IV
With the recent release, and subsequent huge success of Persona 5, it’s safe to say that plenty of people are becoming far more aware of the previously niche JRPG series. Believe it or not, Persona is actually a spin-off from another game series, that being Shin Megami Tensei.
The story involves your standard fare, an oddly futuristic yet medieval kingdom full of samurai, a war between angels and demons, and Pokemon style demon collecting, because of course it does. Whilst Persona is more about smaller scale issues and individual characters, Shin Megami Tensei takes place on a grander scale.
Although they share some similar mechanics, they are still really quite different in terms of gameplay and presentation. Battles take place in first person, focusing around pressing specific weaknesses to gain extra turns, whilst avoiding losing your turn all together.
SMT didn’t get the love it deserved at the time. As great as Persona’s success is, it has massively overshadowed the main series, nor did it help that the game launched to minimal fanfare, as digital only in a good portion of the world.
