15 Scariest Video Games Of The Decade (So Far)

3. Virtue's Last Reward

If you want a perfect example of how good, tight writing and dialogue can create a tense, stressful and downright chilling mood, then look no further than the Zero Escape visual novel series, of which VLR is the second game. Despite having relatively standard gameplay (basically a bunch of escape the room puzzles connected by story sequences), there are so many things that make this game as creepy and spooky as it is. I mentioned the writing, and that is certainly one of them €“ the language used and the interactions between the characters are incredible at maintaining that sense of fear and suffocation. The soundtrack is another reason €“ the music and ambient sounds of the facility are amazing, especially the robotic noise of the announcer. It really reinforces that you€™re all alone and nobody is coming to save you €“ and that€™s a hopeless feeling. Without wanting to spoil too much, because you need to experience it for yourself to fully appreciate it, the plot twists and turns all over the place €“ and like Danganronpa, once bodies start appearing, it only adds to the fear, as you can€™t trust anybody and people will betray each other at the drop of a hat. Probably the best in the genre, VLR is probably the most imperative reason to get a Vita.
