15 Scariest Video Games Of The Decade (So Far)

15. The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter

Ethan Carter is a weird one, because at first glance, it doesn€™t really feel like a scary game. However, what it lacks in the terror department is more than made up for by the creepiness factor. This game draws heavily on the mythology of Lovecraft and the Elder Gods €“ and if you know even a little about those, then you€™ll know just how crazy things can get when C€™thulu and his pals get involved. The sense that there€™s a horror out there that nobody can even understand, let alone describe, perpetuates throughout the game. As we mentioned, there aren€™t many €œscary€ bits €“ there are a couple fairly late on. But what makes the game so creepy is watching how this little boy and his family descend into the madness caused by the Lovecraftian horror plaguing their family. Seeing them resort to murdering each other as they try and find out where their son has taken refuge is as eerie as it is depressing €“ and the little tidbits of diaries that you find are just as disturbing. The twist at the end of the game comes off as poignant, and the game ends on a sombre note €“ so while definitely not as €œscary€ as other names on this list, it absolutely warrants its place.
