15 Severely Underrated PS3 Games That Deserve A Second Chance

15. MAG

"Massive. Action. Game". I remember when these words were first uttered in sequence, and the shivers of excitement running up my spine when I heard about MAG's epic 256-player online battles. This was going to change the game, I thought, and finally provide a competitor to the two-headed monster of Battlefield and Call of Duty. In this online shooter, you allied yourself to one of three factions the stuck with them through your online battles. The overall success of your faction would affect your XP bonuses, extra gear, and so on, creating a sense that your performance in battle actually had an impact on your entire faction, and vice versa. This, along with the fact that every level of the huge battles was controlled by people, made MAG a hugely ambitious game. It played well too, and while it traded off some visual fidelity for huge-scale battles, games ran smoothly even with 256 people. At the best of times - when your team was communicating as it should and everyone knew their role - it was an epic war experience that bordered on the sublime. But, this being the world of online gaming, most communication entailed shrieking and adolescent swearing rather than military-level cohesion. Also, the size of the matches meant that you were often in for a long wait to even jump into a game. MAG's tenure was doomed to be a short one, with the game's small but passionate community calling to this day for a PS4 sequel to be released. MAG offered us a glimpse into a bigger, more ambitious online shooter experience that the world had never seen before, and we continue to dream that another game that takes the genre to this level.
