15 Terrible Mistakes That Almost Ruined Grand Theft Auto

7. Mute Claude (GTA III)

Talking of series protagonists, there's one main character who's just a bore, and of course, that's Claude from GTA III. Though he helped usher in the 3D era of the franchise, he's also the dullest and most forgettable of the protagonists from that point, largely due to the fact that little is known about his past (despite his making a cameo appearance in San Andreas) and, well, he's entirely mute throughout all of his appearances in the series. After the characterisation of the protagonists took such an upswing in personality in Vice City (where Tommy Vercetti was superbly voiced by Ray Liotta), it's painful to go back to GTA III and watch Claude nodding his head and moving on with the next mission without saying a word. Granted, GTA III was so ridiculously ambitious that Rockstar can be forgiven for not giving Claude a voice, but it completely stripped his character of any charm whatsoever, sorely lacking what the later games delivered in spades.
