15 Terrible Mistakes That Almost Ruined Grand Theft Auto

8. Race 'n' Chase

Did you know that Grand Theft Auto was originally conceived as a game called Race 'n' Chase? In addition to this, the game initially allowed players to choose between playing as the criminal or a cop, though through the development process, it eventually morphed into the 1997 title known as GTA. Needless to say, the title and the choice to play as a cop were certainly two terrible mistakes that very nearly ruined GTA for us...but thankfully DMA Design (now Rockstar North) had the sense to change them. For starters, Race 'n' Chase sounds like the sort of video game that GTA would satirically advertise on one of its radio stations, and allowing us to play as the cop would have diluted the demented sense of fun in having no choice but to play as a trigger-happy rogue. Empathy with the enemy is the last thing players want in a game like this, and having this dual narrative would probably have detracted from the iconic status of the series' greatest protagonists like Tommy, CJ, Niko and Trevor.
