It's that time of year again.

After a tumultuous couple of months, the latest Call of Duty is preparing for launch, and it's already proving to be one of the most interesting in a long while. Rebooting a series like Modern Warfare was always going to draw headlines, but the next instalment is set to usher in a confident new direction for the entire franchise, and it's put the hype machine into overdrive.

This list isn't only about Modern Warfare though, but the entire rich history of the series. For over a decade now Activision's shooter has remained at the top of the cultural tentpole, boasting millions of fans that have been there from the beginning and just as many that have cut their teeth on the current-gen releases.

Pretty much everyone will have tried Call of Duty at some point, but there are a bunch of specific highs and lows unique to this series that longtime fans look forward to every time a new release rolls around, and it feels like as good a time as any to celebrate them.
