2. Resident Evil 4

The Resident Evil series has gotten pretty convoluted over the years; at this point, it's almost impossible to keep track of all the characters, their relationships and whatever the hell the plot has turned into. With that said, Resident Evil 4 stands out from the pack, not because it was particularly better than the other Resi games, but because it was a stand-alone story with only a few ties to the rest of the series.

As a result, it wasn't bogged down trying to contextualise everything; it was able to stand up on its own two feet, resulting in one of the best horror games of all time. Seeing as how the series itself has died a slow painful death in recent years, Resident Evil 4 will always stand out as the last great entry in the franchise. In years to come, we'll look back in amazement, and wonder where it went wrong from here.
