While less an in-game moment than one made in the marketing, Super Smash Bros Ultimate's pitch that every character ever included in the franchise's history would be making an appearance was jaw-dropping.

That's a whopping 74 characters, the most ever in Smash history and an astounding feat when considering the fighting game's different contracts with other studios and companies.

While the new characters were, of course, a highlight in themselves, having a roster stacked with familiar faces throughout the various incarnations of Smash will forever be remembered as the moment that sold the game as a truly ultimate experience.

It was just another example of Nintendo understanding the desires of its fanbase and delivering them exactly what they wanted. For a company that has its roots so firmly in the past, they once again proved that The Switch is cemented in forward-thinking games that are focused more around the player than exploitative business opportunities.

There's no doubt this announcement was one of the most positively surprising moments of this generation, players unanimously celebrating having a stacked roster full of characters that represented every iteration of the popular fighting franchise. Seeing Mario, Link or DK is always nice, but having Snake back in a Smash title is undisputably a solid highlight.

Now... where's Waluigi?
