12. The Doom Slayer Awakens - DOOM

SILENT HILLS pt
Bethesda

ID Software's 2016 Doom reboot is pure dumb fun in all the right ways. It's bold, bloody and completely strips away any unnecessary cutscenes so that you can get stuck right into the demon-killing action you slapped forty quid down for. No moment represents this better than the game's opening sequence itself.

Awakening from a long sleep on an operating table surrounded by terrifying demons, the tone suddenly switches gear when the heavy metal revs in the background and your fully naked space marine avatar grabs a nearby demon, smashes his head into gooey red mush, picks up a handgun and slaughters every undead monster in the nearby vicinity.

The Doom Slayer has risen, leaving his tomb behind and quickly donning his iconic armour. A voice pops up in the background delivering some haphazard, cliche story exposition, but the faceless Doomguy doesn't care, pushing ahead, picking up the nearest shotgun and blowing apart more demon skulls.

It's hilariously over the top in the best way possible, setting the tone for your demon-killing adventure and acting as a not-so-subtle indication that old school Doom is back and better than ever. For a franchise that had remained dormant for such a long period of time, this opener was all the assurance we needed that Doom still hadn't lost its touch.
