Outlast casts you as journalist Miles Upshur who has been tipped off in regards to some dodgy goings-on at Mount Massive Asylum. Having no means to defend yourself, the only way to preserve your survival through the horrors of the asylum is your dexterity and the night-vision mode on your handheld camera. Aside from the consistently creepy vibe and crazed inmates you face, most of the time you find yourself running away from any apparent danger and hiding away under beds and in lockers. There are many impressive jump-scares throughout the game, notably the scene where you enter the asylum's kitchen and a lunatic jumps out at you from behind a wall in an attempt on your life. If you ever do go off the deep-end, Mount Massive is definitely one asylum you don't want to be incarcerated in.
4. Bioshock - The Dentist Will See You Now
You've just entered the Paintless Dental clinic in Rapture as Jack and bared witness to some sordid behaviour from the dentist who promptly runs away from you. As you compose yourself you notice a gleaming engineering tonic bottle sat with an audio diary on a desk and make haste towards them excitedly. Once you collect your goodies a white smoke quickly permeates the air and gives you a quick chill down the back of your spine, as you turn around you are introduced to the heavily-spliced dentist, face-to-face as he clocks you with a wild-eyed stare. Emptying the bullets of your weapon into his face is how you would react had you not been startled, but try doing that when you're screaming in an absolute stupor, peppering the walls behind him in a frenzied panic.
