16 Horror Video Games You Must Play Before Halloween

12. The Evil Within

Proving Shinji Mikami should never have left the Resident Evil series, Evil Within feels like the spiritual sequel to Resident Evil 4, with mist-tinged village and chainsaw-wielding maniac intact. It reprises the same game-changing combat system that love-it or hate-it makes for an incredibly immersive experience when you're beset by an angry mob baying for your blood and have to take them on up-close. Thanks to ammo-scarcity and an increased reliance on stealth mechanics you'll have to bait your enemies into traps in the early game, which alongside the lack of frequent checkpointing keeps everything insanely tense, as any one of them can (and will) take you down. The only time you'll be able to breath normally comes when you hear the gorgeous strains of Claude Debussy's Clare de Lune, a composition you'll already know through pop-culture alone that signifies a save point is nearby - making you treasure each and every one until you eventually embark on finding the next.
