16 Little-Known Gaming Facts That'll Blow Your Mind
2. Creator Of The Original Game Boy Was A Janitor
It seems like today in the world of fast-rising Youtube stars we've only just reached the point where a nobody can be a somebody rather quickly, but for one Gunpei Yokoi he happened to grab onto Nintendo's one-way rocket to legendary status at just the right time. Having been both a janitor and assembly line worker, Yokoi used his engineering degree to create a couple of toys in his spare time, the followups to which Nintendo initially pushed, before he turned his attention to what would become handheld gaming - inventing the 'Game & Watch' LCD system in 1980. Later Yokoi had excelled far up the company chain, and when the time came to refine and extend the possibilities of the handheld, he'd really make his mark on the world with the first Game Boy of 1989. It's definitely one of those "Don't ever let anyone tell you what you can't do" stories, and although Gunpei was sadly killed in a car accident in 1997, his legacy lives on in every Nintendo handheld around the world.
