It's safe to say, thanks to the company originating as a playing card manufacturer in 1889, that records simply don't exist on where the name genuinely comes from. This has led to many fans and write-ups stating 'Nintendo' means "Leave luck to heaven". However, Kotaku looked into the claims that appeared out of the ether over the years, delving into more specific translations of the individual words/letters that make up 'Nintendo'. They concluded if you break down such parts of the word in Japanese ('nin', 'ten' and 'do') you can arrive at an approximation of "The company that is allowed to make/sell hanafuda" - something that ties directly into their origins as sellers of the Hanafuda game cards.
