16 Most Ridiculous WTF Moments In Metal Gear Solid History

13. The Fake Advertising/Raiden Switch

Probably the most popular switcheroo in the franchise's history, and the one that separated the hardcore fans from those governed by like, common sense or something. MGS 2's entire pre-release campaign was setup to let you play once again as Solid Snake (who back in 2000/2001 was essentially gaming's action hero messiah-figure), only to actually reveal that nearly all the footage we'd seen was from the initial hour-long Tanker section, before the rest of the game then focussed on white-haired fop, Raiden. Kojima and Konami alike went so far as to shoot scenes that were nowhere to be found in the game (a tact they'd repeat for Phantom Pain, but with different effects), so as to highlight the impact of the game's reveal. In the opening menu there was even the option to bypass the Tanker altogether if you selected the "I've not played MGS 1" option - so determined was Kojima to portray Snake as a talked-about legend, that he elected to remove him from his own game. The whole thing served marvellously to frame Raiden as an incompetent, effeminate fool by comparison - which was entirely the point - although it wouldn't be until MGS 4 that we'd finally get hands-on with the Solid Snake once again.
