16 Most Ridiculous WTF Moments In Metal Gear Solid History

12. Nanomachines Being The Explanation For Everything

To be fair to Kojima, the 'it was all nanomachines!' twist of MGS 4 was about the best thing he could've pulled together, considering we had so many supernatural and otherworldly characters doing the rounds at that point. A vampire who can run on water and survive getting shot in the head? Nanomachines. A woman who was near-death yet is now fully capable of running around? Nanomachines. Every villain's superpowers and every last thing in the world that made you scream "WTF?!" in the first place? Nanomachines, son. Either Kojima was going to leave these plot elements alone, or he was going to attempt the impossible. As such, we got the "microscopic computers in your blood" rollout of information, a point-in-time ex machina that works just enough to have in-world plausibility, but will surely become even more ridiculous the more time goes on. Platinum Games' usage of the plot device to spoof the canon in MG Rising was absolutely perfect.
