2. Mega Man

Mega Man feels like an obvious choice for this. After all, the Blue Bomber himself was inspired by other Japanese animated superheroes such as Astro Boy, though a little bit of American comic book sensibility found its way into the mix as well. Beyond that tie, however, Mega Man is a video game franchise near and dear to the hearts of many. A similar case is Batman, who is known well as originating as a comic book character but whose films, cartoons and video games are each considered larger endeavours overall than DC's comparatively humble monthlies. While no new Mega Man games appear to be in the pipeline, he's starred in four different cartoons over his career to great success. Currently, numerous high-end figures and other merchandise are being created in the image of him, his allies and foes, and successors such as Mega Man X. He even has a critically-acclaimed monthly comic book from Archie which is fast approaching its 50th issue and a second crossover story arc with Sonic the Hedgehog. Perhaps it's time for new frontiers?
