Crystal Dynamics made a huge blunder when promoting Tomb Raider back in 2013, stating that you'd "want to protect" Lara as she was repeatedly brutalised and taken advantage of by dominating male antagonists.

Such an approach was supposed to highlight some sort of "You go, girl!" ethos masquerading as a survival instinct, but it all fell a bit flat, especially where the death animations were concerned.

As a way to hammer home how unrelenting the environmental hazards and her overall journey was, any missed opportunity would result in snapped limbs, crippling impacts, and even one now-infamous one where Lara gets impaled on a huge wooden spike.

The whole 'torture porn' aspect was way too front and centre, and it wasn't until Rise of the Tomb Raider showcased some more considered set-pieces and surmountable action moments, that the developer's original vision truly came together.
