18 Best Indie Games Of The Decade (So Far)
14. Rogue Legacy
A word you'll hear every few minutes when discussing any swathe of indie titles is 'unique', as far more than any big-budget studio, they can afford to take risks on something innovative and original, as oppose to doubling down on what worked previously.
Rogue Legacy takes the idea of a one-button side-scroller and throws in the idea of you playing as an entire bloodline of knights, all with their own traits and occasional special powers. It's downright hilarious at times too, as there's a huge number of possibilities that get thrown into the pot every time you die:
You might end up with someone who farts every time they dash, a hulking brute who can only see what's right in front of him - or a total badass with access to a cycle of spells and weapons... but only a fraction of his parents' health.
It's this risk-reward feature that so many games attempt and completely fail, but with Rogue's take on levels that themselves change every time (unless you put down the coin to lock a layout in) it opens up a huge amount of variation, alongside letting you put money into other stats to boost your next in-line should you bite the big one.
And you will, Rogue Legacy is extremely hard in some of its rooms - but when the whole thing is carried off with this much charm, you won't even care.
