Now and then you'll come across a game that's so visually arresting, so perfectly put together by an art department or team of programmers working in unison, that you'll want to check it out regardless.

Banner Saga is that game, and luckily it's far, far more than a pretty face underneath too - putting you in the shoes of a travelling band of warriors attempting to survive the end of days, whilst meeting up with various enemies and potential friends along the way.

Combat is old-school and turn-based, letting you take a number of fighters (both human and giant, called Varl) into battle, and its through a push n' pull nature of balancing armour and health stats that really make every encounter shine.

In between crunching the stats in your head of how much damage you're going to do, where to position your guys and who should attack when, you'll be treated to one of the best fantasy-based world lores there's been in a good long time, letting you choose allegiances, conversation options, discussions on historical knowledge and plenty more.

Combine the whole lot and you'll easily lose yourself to Banner Saga, but luckily enough this little gem that only came out in 2013 is soon to release its middle chapter later this year - so you'd best brush up 'til then.
