7. Axiom Verge
Who needs Metroid, eh? (seriously though, 3DS owners, Metroid: Samus Returns is stellar)
Axiom Verge is the one-man production from Thomas Happ, a dude who clearly loved him some Metroidvania side-scroll run n' jump shooting as every single element here is paying direct tribute to Nintendo's masterpiece, Super Metroid.
Thankfully Happ knew where to impress too, as Axiom Verge actually makes great use of environmental affects that mimic what it would look like in the 80s if your cartridge was dirty and couldn't load the level.
Combine that with a phenomenal array of upgrades, weapons and character movement options, new-age disintegration effects for the bosses and a world that blends Alien with Splatterhouse, and you're onto a real winner.
