12. The Surge

The Surge
Deck13

A followup to Lords of the Fallen from developers Deck13, The Surge takes all the base tenets of Dark Souls and blasts them off into space.

"Sci-fi Souls" is literally what you're getting here, though with a really neat twist: Limb-targeting and execution choice dictates what loot and items an enemy drops. Say you like the look of some arm-cannon or you've been blasted apart by it many times prior - just aim for the enemies' arm and tear the thing right off.

This is on top of a story that doesn't rely on interpretation or item descriptions to understand, instead being very upfront about your initially physically disabled protagonist being gruesomely fitted into an exosuit before exploring the infected station around him. Unlike Bloodborne and Dark Souls, such a simple and easy understanding of "Okay, I'm the good guy, these are bad guys, this is why I'm killing" works wonders in a genre always so devoid of overt purpose.

The Surge might wear its influences on biomechanical sleeves, but in aping and innovating on a genre so closely, provides a suitable "spiritual sequel" that's more than worth your time.
