Dark Souls III might have nailed spectacle and ended the franchise in style, but Ornstein & Smough is where Dark Souls the brand name became Dark Souls, the cultural entity.

A ludicrous, brutally hard duel against two punishingly powerful bosses, Ornstein sprints after you and attacks with a devastating series of spear-stabs, whilst Smough is forever behind him, ready to leap in or charge through both of you at a second's notice.

Together they've gotten the better of many players and their controllers, as until you perfect how to respond to both their attack patterns at once, it really is a case of sprinting to the fight area, dying, trying again and repeating for hours at a time.

That feeling when you finally do it though, when you can finally riposte, dodge and stay on your toes. When everything just clicks and you feel yourself keeping up, capitalising on that with a victory is by far the single-most satisfying gaming experience I've ever had.
