15. Amalgam Alpha - The Evil Within
Many criticised The Evil Within's early 2000 feel and overall approach to horror, but personally, that's precisely what made it so endearing. This felt like the sequel to Resident Evil 4 we never got, and bosses like Amalgam Alpha are reminiscent of that franchise's most hulking bullet-sponge behemoths, where defeating them really was a test of endured perseverance.
Like the days of Resident Evil old, you're thrown into an enclosed space, given limited ammo and left with only your wits to survive. In Alpha's case it's an underground parking lot, to which you need to evade his damaging attacks with stealth and specific hiding spots.
Together, this really does put the pressure on, as it's a very long fight dependant on how good you are at targeting only a handful of specific weak spots - ones that are continually moving as Alpha bounds around the place.
Its sensibilities may have been routed in the last generation, but when those lessons can expertly produce one of the most traditional and enjoyable bosses in gaming, it's no bad thing.
