14. Redmaw - Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn's Thunderjaws are by far some of the most immediately terrifying and straight-up fun to fight of all the machines. Literally inspired by a T-Rex and bolstered with missile cannons, lasers and hydraulic legs to repeatedly chase after and stomp you with, Redmaw is a one-off, more mythological take whose been known to slay hunters on their travels.

By the time you finally track the beast down, all the weight of those stories locks into place, as you're finally right there, staring at the Redmaw.

Actually fighting the thing is an improvisational joy, thanks to Horizon's combat being so robust in every respect. You'll knee-slide through its feet and attach cables to route the thing to the spot. You'll ping off explosive arrows to tear missile packs from its sides, using them to return fire once you've got some distance.

Lobbing bombs, freezing its sensors, dodge-diving out the way of a tail-swipe at the last second. Fighting any Thunderjaw is a rush, but Redmaw's narrative backing makes the encounter one for this decade's history books.
