18 Best Video Games Of 2016 (So Far)
7. Fire Emblem Fates
Don't let its 16-bit sprites fool you, Fire Emblem is a refined beast of a game, its top-down turn-based battling having a ludicrous amount of customisability within. You play as a custom Prince/Princess who's lived a sheltered life, only to find yourself torn between two kingdoms who both claim you as their own.
Wars break out, people die, and a ton of alternating turns are taken as you defeat your enemies step by step. Every time you engage the camera neatly zooms down to the ground and you get an animation like the one below, but it never slows the pace, never getting in the way of battle overall.
The best part is another crazy soap opera-style plot that spans permanent repercussions if you crank the difficulty up, yet is still split across two completely across two different versions of the game, Birthright and Conquest. Picking either denotes which story will play out, and a final DLC pack, Revelation, concludes both arcs.
There are endless item and armour combos, alongside the option to grind through optional challenges on your way to the grand finale. Fire Emblem is turn-based RPG strategy gaming at its finest, and if you're in possession of a 3DS, check it out.
