18 Best Video Games Of 2017 (So Far)
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
You can check out my full breakdown of Horizon vs. Zelda over here, but sufficed to say, Horizon just, just barely misses out on taking the top spot, though I wouldn't be surprised if many other outlets crown Aloy's journey as their absolute finest.
Speaking of which, having Aloy be this out-of-left-field heroine that you really, truly root for is just the beginning, as you can feel the weight being lifted from Guerrilla Games finally escaping the Killzone franchise. Everything from the best graphics you've ever seen to the design of the world is outstanding; a unique blend of tribal bow n' arrow combat, paired with a mysteriously futuristic world filled with robo-dinosaurs and underground manufacturing plants.
Part of the fun is unravelling precisely who Aloy is and what happened for the world to get to this stage, but that comes with some of the best-feeling gameplay of all time. Letting loose an arrow, restraining large enemies with tripwires or slow-mo sliding on your knees to evade attacks as the whole game just looks genuinely stunning - Guerrilla should be endlessly proud of such a creative vision, and every gamer in possession of a PS4 needs this in their library.
It's a bonafide system-justifier.
