18 Essential Xbox One Games Every Owner Must Play

8. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Some games are so damn good, it doesn't matter which console you're in possession of - if it's on your system, pick it up.

Playing one last time as Big Boss, you'll embark on a ludicrous amount of things to do, all factoring into one of the most moreish gameplay loops in years. Rebuilding your HQ by deploying on tons of story and side missions, the goal is to recruit hundreds of soldiers, clear outposts, rescue hostages, experiment with stealth and assault tactics, camouflage yourself, fight bosses, work with buddy characters - all of this within the first hour or two.

Sure, the story might be complete insanity, delivered mostly through cassette tapes that require you sit for hours on end to get the full picture, but when it all plays as good as this, that appeal is enough to hold even the most gameplay-focussed player.

It turns into by far the best-playing Metal Gear yet, and whilst I've got some suggestions on how Hideo Kojima should've done a few elements, is still the finest third-person action game around.
