While anyone who was cool in 1992 was playing Street Fighter 2 on the SNES, the game shot to worldwide fame on its release into gaming arcades in 1991. The fighter was a sensation, delivering beautiful hand-drawn graphics and depth rarely seen in a game of this type.

Everyone has their favourite Street Fighter character, but many opted for Ryu and Ken due to their similar move sets (in the lore, Ryu and Ken are rivals and former training partners). Of all the sound effects it’s the Hadouken, the actual word shouted out when one of the two characters pushes a ball of spirit energy across the screen, that resonates most with players.

It is without a doubt one of gaming’s most iconic sound effects.
