13. The Nursery - ZombiU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvBJzRJFhNY Nintendo's not exactly the first name that comes to mind when you think of horror. Sure, they've had their hits over the years, and many have become legends in the genre - the Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil 4, and Eternal Darkness being prime examples - but overall, horror aficionados have generally had to look elsewhere for a fix. So it was more than a little surprising when ZombiU hit store shelves, and turned out to be the strongest titles the genre's seen in years. The hook for this one is what really gives it an edge in terms of effectively creating an atmosphere of dread - if your character is killed at any time during gameplay, they're gone for good. No second chances, no retries. At that point, you're respawned as another survivor and it's up to you to track down your previous character's reanimated corpse and retrieve any valuables. And given that ZombiU is a fairly challenging experience, you're not going to be cutting through scores of the undead with a machine gun hanging off your chest as you mow down zombie after zombie. Ammo isn't easy to come by, so you'll have to do your best to get by on whatever you manage to find, and the focus on melee combat adds to the overall feeling of vulnerability as you move from one location to the next. The one that will really stick with you though, is the nursery. There's no jump scares here, in fact not a whole lot happens until you come across the boss. You beat the nasty flesh-eater down - wham-bam thank you ma'am - and it's done. No biggie, right? Well, move in for a closer look and try not to have a heart attack.
