19 Things We Learned From The Metal Gear Solid Series

1. No One Can Voice Snake But David Hayter. NO ONE.

This is the one thing that should be shouted from the rooftops and tattooed on the forehead of the gaming populace. As tens of thousands of people have realised over the years; the gravelly tones of one David Hayter provide the ONLY person who should be in charge of Solid Snake's vocal chords. There's a slight chance you've no idea what's being discussed here, but should you mention to your nearest MGS fanatic "So what's the deal with the new Snake's voice?!", the resultant volcanic eruption of fanboy-rage will level the nearest superstore. As it stands, following six main titles with his name up in lights, Hayter was replaced by none other than 24's Kiefer Sutherland a.k.a A Guy With A Very Recognisable Voice. Kojima confirmed the change was to put more of an emphasis on facial expressions rather than voicing emotions, therefore he required a 'proper actor' in Sutherland, but as any who have played Ground Zeroes can attest to, Kiefer is a VERY poor Snake, sounding almost entirely lifeless save for a couple lines of shouted dialogue near the game's climax - which sound just like his character Jack Bauer's more perturbed moments on 24. If rumours are to be believed Kiefer will carry on as Big Boss, with Solid Snake being voiced once again by Hayter in the upcoming Phantom Pain, however judging by how the entire situation was handled in regards to replacing him without so much as a word than more of a lack of communication letting him know either way, it's best not to hold your breath. So what were your favourite moments from the series? Or alternatively what was the tipping point? Maybe MGS just never 'clicked' with you, and you'd welcome Hideo Kojima turning his talents elsewhere? Let us know in the comments!
