11. Portal 2
The original Portal was a short, but brilliant, first-person physics puzzle game that tested your ability to solve detailed conundrums. Intertwined with the gameplay was a battle between the player and GLaDOS: the AI that runs the science facility. The follow-up was the first full game and Valve delivered. The plot revolves around a power struggle; first with the maniacal and devious GLaDOS and then with the slightly-less wise Wheatley voiced by Stephan Merchant. Both the voice actors for the two characters do an excellent job of creating genuinely hilarious personalities. Both ridicule and mock you as you progress through the facility. The second half of the game your journey from the very bottom of the building to the top acts as a guide to the history of the facility. Recordings from the original owner play in the background as you complete puzzles and they provide some entertaining lines of dialogue. As the puzzles get more complicated youll be thoroughly tested and forced to think four or five moves ahead. Youll need to use all the various mechanics and elements available to escape some of the later rooms. The comical dialogue and inter-AI banter means youll rarely get bored during these segments no matter how hard it gets. Portal 2 ultimately takes the aspects that made the original experience so brilliant and exploits them to the max. The puzzles and the facility itself are a joy to behold but its the characters especially the AI who deserve the acclaim.
