9. Massive Chalice
Never let it be said that narrative genius Tim Schafer doesn't like to take risks, as his independent studio can surely kick out the point n' click adventures with the best of 'em, yet it's the XCOM-style Massive Chalice that really stands out as something far more treasurable. Letting you essentially control God, you'll look after a small island comprised of various bloodlines, putting them to work battling the seemingly immortal Cadence; a malevolent force hellbent on wiping out your poor little warriors. The entire war takes place over 300 years, so you'll have to make some tough decisions on which heroes should reign over the various kingdoms and foster children, against which should be on the front lines. You can force all sorts of slightly creepy, Game of Thrones-style match-ups 'for the good of the country', but it's in zipping between family stat screens and turn-based combat that gives Massive Chalice a standout sense of identity.
