20 Best N64 Games Ever

9. Star Fox 64

Star Fox, Lylat Wars, or whatever you want to call it, is not the most complex or nuanced game for the N64, but it damn sure is one of the most purely enjoyable, and kick-started the successful Star Fox franchise. Though Star Fox is for the most part a rail shooter, don't let that put you off: it's absolutely dripping with personality, largely by way of protagonist Fox McCloud and his team of colourful animal wingmen such as Slippy Toad and Peppy Hare, all brought to life with expressive voice acting rarely seen on the N64. Even on its own merits though, the rail-based shooting is great fun, in large part because of the detailed visuals and slick controls, making it a breeze to rain fire down upon as many enemy crafts as possible. In addition to this, there's an awesome multiplayer mode for up to 4-players, featuring (among other modes) the absurdly addictive Battle Royal, in which the last pilot standing is the winner. Plus, without Star Fox, we wouldn't have the immortal "Do a barrel roll" meme - as is so enthusiastically shouted by Peppy during the game.
