How were Rare supposed to follow up one of the most critically acclaimed FPS games of all time in Goldeneye 007? They smartly opted for something in a similar gameplay vein but thematically completely different with Perfect Dark, a futuristic sci-fi shooter that features similar mission types, though boasts a radical new array of weaponry. The sentry-like Laptop Gun is always a popular one, though the FarSight XR-20 surely has to be one of the greatest video game weapons ever conceived, capable of killing any enemy with one shot, even through a freaking wall! The lengthy single-player mode is awesome, but after the success of Goldeneye's multiplayer, that's really what everyone was interested in with Perfect Dark. Though it perhaps doesn't benefit from quite the same charm as Goldeneye, the option to throw bots in the mix is incredibly welcome and the sheer variety of weapons, gadgets and customisable options makes it in many ways a far more diverse and unpredictable multiplayer outing than Rare's previous hit shooter. Still, shame about Perfect Dark Zero though, eh?
