Goldeneye 007 may be remembered as the game that set the console FPS genre alight, but one shouldn't forget about one game that predated it; Turok: Dinosaur Hunter - the enormously successful shooter that launched an intermittently successful franchise. It's hard to argue against the fact that the controls were cumbersome and took some getting used to, but once players have it down pat, Turok reveals itself as a visually stunning, visceral shooter that made it clear Nintendo weren't merely in the market of brightly-coloured worlds and cute protagonists. Eschewing the linear, boxed-in nature of most FPS titles at the time such as Duke Nukem and Quake, Turok gave us a large, open-world environment that pushed the N64 to its technical limit as we defended ourselves against a fleet of angry (and hungry) dinosaurs. What's more, it was insanely violent, which helped shift the perception that N64 was a "kiddie console". Though the lack of a multiplayer suite was hugely disappointing, the 1998 sequel, Seeds of Evil, introduced this for up to 4 players.
