Allowing for simultaneous multiplayer which is extremely rare on the NES, the original Contra was something truly special. You and a friend can take on the mantle of Bill Rizer and Lance Bean and run through various locations mowing down enemies.

These enemies are a group of aliens called Red Falcon who have advanced machinery and can control people's minds. It's the video game equivalent of a dumb over-the-top war movie where realism is just thrown out of the window. It's great.

What's really important is the gameplay, you use a number of different weapons that can be shot in eight different directions which is amazing in comparison to other shooters on the NES like Mega Man where you can only shoot back and forth with most weapons.

The thing is, you need these crazy weapons as the game is ridiculously hard even for the NES. Just do what every kid did at the time though and use the Konami Code to give yourself some extra lives. With these lives, you might even be able to get to the second level if you're lucky.
