6. Bloodborne
Before every difficult game was referred to as a "Soulsborne", all we really had to contend with were FromSoftware's lesser known title Demon Souls, before they hit the scene with the bastard-hard Dark Souls.
And I'm not going to say that Bloodborne is any easier, or watered down, but it's way it's taken From's own template of combat that makes it stand out as a brilliant game.
Instead of the more methodical (read: slow) pace of its predecessors, Bloodborne flipped that on its head by encouraging more active offence - literally going in guns blazing. Combat was faster, more fluid and stylish but still equally punishing if you flubbed a hit or gunshot parry.
Coupled with a dark and sinister gothic world, with a story involving older practices like bloodletting and such, with some otherworldy goings on as well. As with the other titles, exposition came from exploration, spurring players to actively search every corner of Yarnham's dark dealings.
It is also a beautiful looking game, the dark architecture contrasted with the vast amounts of blood that sprays everywhere.
